HANRORO's "I'm happy," released in August 2023 on the Take-off EP, is a song that earns its title only in the last minute. For most of its three and a half minutes, the narrator is negotiating with shame, longing, and the urge to flee. The happiness, when it arrives, is less a mood than a verdict.
The opening lines set up the song's central embarrassment. The narrator confesses that she has been dragging down the blue sky to use as an excuse for her own darkness, and she calls the act shameful. It is an unusually specific image: not self-pity in general, but the particular dishonesty of blaming a bright world for a private gloom. The bridge introduces the song's most beautiful image. Just for today, she wants to become a cloud holding her own self inside it, and then shake herself loose in the rain. The arrival of happiness
Only after all of this does the title phrase land. She is happy, she says, because new skin has grown around her red-rimmed eyes, and because she has filled herself with the dream of melting even a cold world. Both reasons are evidence-based. The new skin is proof that there was a wound, and that it has closed. The dream of warming the world is proof that she has energy left to spend outward, not just inward. Happiness here is not the absence of hurt; it is the presence of healing tissue and a project.
The long wordless "woo" sections that bookend the chorus do a lot of structural work. They give the listener room to sit with the declarations without immediately analyzing them, and they let the song breathe in a way the lyrics, dense with self-correction, do not. HANRORO is part of a generation of Korean singer-songwriters who emerged in the early 2020s writing in a confessional indie-rock register, and "I'm happy" is a good example of why that mode has resonated: it treats interior life as something that can be argued with in real time, not just reported on.
