Vinxen's 'FLYING HIGH WITH U': A Viking Ride, a Bouquet, and a Moment Without Cynicism
Vinxen built his early reputation on introspection and unease, which is what makes "FLYING HIGH WITH U" so striking: it is a rapper letting himself be soft in public without irony. Released as a stand-alone single in March 2021, the song stages its romance on a specific memory, a bairkeing (Viking, the swinging pirate-ship amusement ride) with a blue sea behind it. That image, half thrill and half postcard, sets the tone for everything that follows.
The opening establishes the scene and the crush at the same time. From the top of the ride he tells her she is prettier than the background, prettier this way and that. It is deliberately unclever writing. He is not trying to impress her with a metaphor; he is trying to say the obvious thing that people in love actually say.
The first verse jumps back to the days before the reunion. He describes killing time alone, blowing money on nothing like a kid at play, spending whole days without regretting them, but still missing her out of nowhere. Then a small, specific gesture: he buys a bouquet from the flower shop under his building, not for any occasion. The florist recommends lisianthus because its flower-meaning is "unchanging love," and Vinxen makes a joke of not being able to pronounce the name ("리시안셔스, RIS안셔스"). The joke does real work. The hook returns to the ride. Suspended over the night sea, he says happiness turns out to be embarrassingly easy, and that the night is already ending too soon. His prayer is a small absurd one: that all her time somehow flows to him, making an impossible forever. The English refrain, repeated like a mantra, is doing what Korean hip-hop hooks often do, using a simple English phrase to carry the pure emotional load while the Korean verses handle detail.
The second verse is where the song admits how unusual this feeling is for him. He asks who else he could ever show his "kernel" to, the innermost self, and calls it a miracle that humans can trust each other even halfway. He describes freezing this feeling and hiding it deep in his chest, knocking to see if anyone is home and telling loneliness to get lost. The imagery gets rangier here: tears as waterfall, pain postponed by surfing, plans to build a house inside her arms tomorrow too. It is the sound of someone who normally writes about isolation deciding, for the length of one song, to write about the opposite.
"How can I live without you?" opens the bridge in English before the song's most quoted conceit: he is the Earth, she is the sun, and a day without contact is a day without light. He compares his swollen heart to a balloon and says it would not be strange at all to just float away. The line "사랑하며 살아가는구나, 이 나도" is the emotional pivot, roughly, "so even I am living a life with love in it," spoken with a small shock of self-recognition.
The closing lines pull back from pure infatuation into something more grown. He acknowledges she will fly one day too, that nothing is truly eternal, but insists there is still such a thing as a lifetime. He hates ambiguity, he hates calculating. Being in the same time and the same space as her is enough. It is a quiet, almost stubborn definition of commitment from someone whose earlier work rarely made room for that vocabulary.
"FLYING HIGH WITH U" endures in Vinxen's catalogue precisely because it is the exception. Listeners who came to him for melancholy get a track where the melancholy is briefly turned off, replaced by a pirate ship, a mispronounced flower, and the admission that maybe happiness is not as complicated as he has been making it.
