wave to earth's 'seasons': loving someone by leaving them
The premise of "seasons" is a small, difficult idea: that the most loving thing a person can do is step back. The narrator is not being rejected. They are the one leaving, and they are leaving because they have decided they are the problem.
wave to earth are a South Korean trio whose early releases, including the summer flows 0.02 EP that houses this track, sit in a soft-rock and bedroom-pop register that borrows from Japanese city pop and American indie folk. The band tends to build songs around clean electric guitar and unhurried vocals, and "seasons" is characteristic: the arrangement leaves plenty of air around the words, which is fitting for a lyric this hesitant.
A refusal framed as care
The opening lines set up a contradiction the song never resolves. "I can't be your love," the narrator says, then explains that they are somehow too trivial now, that their life is falling apart, that no one would notice if they disappeared. The self-image is low, and the logic that follows from it is that the beloved deserves better. This is not the language of a breakup argument. It is the language of someone talking themselves into an exit.
What complicates the withdrawal is the promise attached to it. Even while stepping away, the narrator vows to pray for the other person constantly and, in the song's central line, offers up "all my life, my seasons." The word choice matters. Seasons are not a moment or a gesture; they are the whole calendar of a life, given in the abstract because it cannot be given in person.
Time doing the work
The second verse is where the song widens out. Leaves wither and grow back; the beloved has gone far away; the narrator imagines themselves "pushing up daisies," the old English idiom for being dead and buried. In three short images, the song telescopes from a single autumn to a full lifetime to the grave. The gesture of bringing "all the chances" back to a fixed point suggests someone hoarding every possible future and offering it up, even knowing it will not be accepted.
The refrain then returns with a small but important addition: "By your side, I'll be your seasons." Earlier, the narrator was giving their seasons away as a gift. By the end, they are imagining themselves as the seasons, as the background weather of someone else's life. It is a fantasy of permanent, invisible presence, which is what people tend to reach for when actual presence has been ruled out.
Why the song lands
A lot of contemporary Korean indie in this mode is easy to dismiss as mood music, and "seasons" could be heard that way if you are not listening to the words. But the lyric is doing something specific: it is dramatising the kind of love that expresses itself through absence, and it refuses to let the narrator off the hook by making the beloved cruel or the situation dramatic. Nobody has done anything wrong. The narrator has simply decided, perhaps rightly and perhaps not, that their staying would be a form of damage.
That ambiguity is what keeps the song from sentimentality. The listener is not told whether the narrator is being noble, self-pitying, depressed, or all three at once. The final two words, "My love," hang there as an address with no reply expected. For a song built out of soft chords and quiet delivery, it ends up carrying an unusual amount of weight, which is why "seasons" has become one of the tracks that introduced a global audience to the band.

"seasons"
I can't be your love
Look, it's too trivial for you now
Oh my life is fallin' apart
Maybe no one will notice if I disappear
But I'll pray for you all the time
If I could be by your side
I'll give you all my life, my seasons
I can't be your love
'Cause I'm afraid I'll ruin your life
While the leaves withered away
And grew again
You have gone far away
I'll be pushing up daisies
And bring all the chances to here
But I'll pray for you all the time
If I could be by your side
I'll give you all my life, my seasons
By your side, I'll be your seasons
My love
